Optimal Resting Time

Optimal Resting Time

While working out, it is very important to make sure you are getting enough rest in between each set.  When you are doing isolation exercises,  such as curls, shoulder raises and dips, you need to rest 1- 2 minutes in between each set. However, when you are doing heavy compound exercises, such as squats, bench and deadlift, you want to rest a bit longer than isolation exercises because you are exerting more energy with the heavier weight. I recommend resting 3 to 4 minutes in between each set for compound exercises.

Optimal Hydration

Optimal Hydration

While working out at the gym, it is important that your body gets proper hydration. To make sure you are giving your body the proper liquids it needs, start drinking water during the first 30 minutes of your workout.  For the remainder of your workout, you should transition from water to a beverage that contains electrolytes and sodium in order to fully replenish your hydration. My beverage of choice is Gatorade because it not only tastes good but it will also help replenish what your body loses during your workout.  Gatorade will also help keep your energy levels higher throughout the workout.

Proper Warm Up and Cool Down

Proper Warm Up and Cool Down

Before you begin your workout, it is beneficial for your body to do a quick 5 minute cardio warm up to get your blood flowing and loosened up. In addition to this, I recommend doing some dynamic stretches, such as moving your arms and legs freely in different motions.  Once you are done with your workout, make sure you do some static stretching, which entails holding stretches for a longer period of time.  These stretches help improve your flexibility, range of motion and help muscles recover faster.
